More than 5,000 new awards issued to waitlisted TEFA students

The Comptroller’s office has awarded additional Texas Education Freedom Accounts (TEFA) to students who were initially placed on the waitlist.  

This week, 5,499 waitlisted students have been awarded using funding that was made available when students opted out or selected “homeschool/other,” which reduced their funding amount to $2,000. All these newly awarded students were assigned to priority tier 2, meaning their applications showed household incomes at or below 200% of the federal poverty level.  

Adding these students to the more than 100,000 previously awarded means that nearly 110,000 students have been awarded TEFA so far.  

Of those, nearly 3,000 have opted out of the program, leaving nearly 107,000 active awards.  

These numbers will continue to shift slightly as more families finalize their selections for the upcoming school year. 

We will continue to maintain a dynamic waitlist. More students will receive awards as families opt out and appeals get resolved.  Families will receive updates by email, by text message and through the program portal if their status changes.
